President Anura Kumara Dissanayake instructed officials to identify the full scope of services that local government bodies are required to provide to citizens and to distinguish between those that can be integrated into a digital system and those that cannot.
The President also directed that an assessment be conducted to determine whether existing systems cover all these services.
He made these remarks during a progress review meeting regarding the digitalization of local government bodies and Divisional Secretariats—an initiative forming part of the government's broader digital transformation program aimed at ensuring a faster, more efficient, and transparent public service for the people.
The meeting was held at the Presidential Secretariat in Colombo.
Extensive discussions were held regarding the "National Framework for the Digitalization of Local Government Bodies," which is currently being developed by the Ministry of Public Administration, Provincial Councils, and Local Government. Discussions were held regarding the establishment of a single national system covering the entire public service—replacing the disparate systems currently operated independently by various institutions—and the President emphasized the need for close coordination between the Ministry of Public Administration, Provincial Councils and Local Government and the Ministry of Digital Economy Affairs in this endeavor.
