The Ministry of Transport, Highways, and Urban Development has decided to introduce a demerit point system for drivers who commit traffic violations.
This system is being introduced as part of the reforms under the National Transport Action Plan, which was launched to enhance the safety of public transport services.
A pilot project for this initiative will run from October 1st until March 2027, providing a six-month period for drivers to become informed and adapt to the new safety protocols.
This six-month pilot project is being implemented collaboratively by the Ministry of Transport, Highways, and Urban Development alongside the Sri Lanka Police, the Ministry of Digital Economy, the Department of Motor Traffic, LankaPay, GovTech, and other state and state-affiliated agencies. The Ministry emphasizes that it is mandatory for all drivers operating on expressways and highways to align with this system during the upcoming six-month period. Plans are in place to permanently implement a demerit points system for drivers starting in March 2027, following the conclusion of a six-month pilot project. This system will apply to 33 types of traffic offenses. Concurrently, the process for making online payments to government institutions via 'Gov-Pay' has also been streamlined.
